The Investigator’s “Art of Interview & Interrogation” by BowMac

October 17 @ 8:00 am - October 21 @ 5:00 pm

Draper City Police Department is hosting “The Investigators Art of Interviews & Interrogations” presented by BowMac Educational Services.

This is a 5 day (40 hours) course.
M-F, OCTOBER 17-21, 2022
0800-1700 hrs, each day.

Maximum seats: 25
**(Note: A minimum of 15 paid registrations must be received by October 7th, or the course may be cancelled)

The program is designed to provide field agents, deputies, officers and investigators with proven techniques that can be applied in various accusatory and non-accusatory interview situations. Participants will develop skills in preparing for the interrogation with a “game plan” which emphasizes a pro-active, rather than reactive role. 40% of this class is hands-on so we keep the numbers small. Packing large numbers in an auditorium and filling a notebook may entertain but it does not build skills.

Experienced instructors who are practitioners will train course participants in what to expect, what to look for, and how to interpret what is happening in the interrogation setting. A series of lectures, video tape exercises, practical hands-on classroom experiences, and evening assignments are used in the instruction. The program includes up-to-date information on the legal aspects of interrogation and admissibility of the confession into court.

Target Audience
This course of instruction is designed for the investigators and officers who are engaged in interviewing witnesses, victims and suspects. The information and techniques are equally applicable for the new investigator and the investigator with years of experience. Many of our most appreciative students are those with 10 to 15 + years of experience and they ask, “where were you when I started my career”?

Personnel must be employed by a public enforcement/investigative agency.

Training enables course graduates to:
Describe the basic elements of a non-accusatory (witness, victim) interview.
Describe and demonstrate applicable techniques and question formulation for interviewing witnesses, victims, and informants,
List and describe the seven (7) steps/phases of interrogation,
Identify physiological responses that demonstrate truthful and deceptive answers,
Describe and demonstrate various strategies of building rapport with people,
Demonstrate through class exercises and evening assignments, interview/interrogation skills in dealing with:
a. the elimination of multiple suspects;
b. the handling of negative responses and objections
c. confronting the suspect to elicit meaningful responses.
Calibrate an individual’s communication strategy,
Formulate questions and statements that will elicit physiological mannerisms from the suspect,
Demonstrate the ability to select an untruthful or deceptive person from a group of truthful persons,
Prepare oral or written confessions for meaningful presentation in court proceedings.

Course Length
5-Full Days (40 Hours)

Maximum Seats: 25
